Dear Visitor,
We are pleased to send you Bulletin number 40.
On 6 and 7 March 2019, the first university conferences on research with a gender perspective were held at the UIB, an activity linked to the II Equality Plan of our university (point 6.4.2), approved by the Governing Council. on December 20, 2018, which has had the financial support of the Instituto de la Mujer para la Igualdad de Oportunidades, and the support of the Instituto Balear de la Dona.
The aim of the conference was to bring together research with a gender perspective from different disciplines, as well as to present doctoral theses, final Master's theses and final degree projects linked to gender studies in the last two academic years.
The total number of registered participants was 50, which was the proposed figure, and the total number of speakers was 23.
The holding of these conferences has helped us to recognize the weaknesses and strengths of gender studies at the UIB, as well as to strengthen a network, both between teachers and between teachers and students.
In terms of strengths, we were able to see the high level of quality of gender studies at the UIB, the variety of topics, creativity and transversality, as well as the incorporation of young teachers from different disciplines, with this theme and their high degree of preparation and commitment.
On the other hand, among the weaknesses, we must once again point out the difficulties faced by colleagues in scientific disciplines, in particular the low presence of female students in engineering studies.
In particular we want to thank Dra. Mercedes Alcañiz, professor of the Department of Sociology at the Universitat Jaume I in Castellón and director of the Equality Unit of the same university, the inaugural lecture she gave, which dealt with women and science, equality and gender perspective in research.
We would also like to thank the director of the Balearic Women's Institute, Mrs. Rosa Cursach, and Dra. Joana Maria Seguí, Vice-Rector for Cultural Projection, Open University and University Venues, gave her kind words at the opening ceremony.
Dra. Esperança Bosch. Director of the UIB Equality Office
