The Institute for Research and Innovation in Education (IRIE) is a research body created by Organic Law 6/2001 of 21st December, modified by Organic Law 4/2007 of 12th April whereby it is incorporated into the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and works in collaboration with the Department of Education and Universities (CEU) at the Government of the Balearic Islands (GOIB). Its purpose is scientific research, undertaken over four areas: didactics and school organisation; educational psychology; the theory and history of education, and specific didactics. In turn, the IRIE supplements research by organising and running doctoral and postgraduate programmes and courses, and offering technical and training advice to both teachers and learning institutions.
IRIE Services
The IRIE offers three kinds of services:
- Training and Innovation: aimed at training researchers, members or collaborators from research groups comprising the IRIE, training Teaching and Research Staff (PDI) at the UIB and knowledge transfer activities.
- Support for Research: the IRIE has a Research Advice Service (SAR) and provides support to research and innovation projects.
- Communication: this service is aimed at promoting all activities that could be useful or interesting for research groups or learning institutions.
Research Groups
The IRIE currently comprises eleven established research groups and twenty-one associate groups, as well as nine individual researchers. The Institute groups 429 researchers in total, spread across the four areas of research.
Doctorates
The IRIE, alongside the Department of Applied Pedagogy and Educational Psychology, and the Department of Pedagogy and Specific Didactics at the UIB, offers two doctoral programmes: the Ed.D in Education and the Ed.D in Educational Technology.
The IRIE is also committed to ongoing work to promote and improve research activities linked to education, as well as consolidating the services it offers.
